For those who already practise and live this great sport, there is no need to be long with explanations. Thanks to the surf magazines , the word of mouth, the online blogs and chats, we’re known as the Hawaii of the Mediterranean Sea..And we fully deserve this reputation. All those who don’t practise it, or just heard about it, will ask the fateful question straight away: “Can you really surf in Italy? Do you have any waves at all?”, I’d like to answer that yes indeed. Almost all the Italian coastline is good to practise surf almost in any season, from the Adriatic Sea to the Tyrrhenian , the Ionian and the Liguria Sea. Both the waves height and their frequency is fairly good everywhere, but with many differences. Nothing though can be compared to the West Coast of Sardinia.
Gonnesa Gulf alone has some of the best spots. The most beautiful, and rightfully most famous, is Guroneddu Bay. Embedded in a wonderful and wild bay, it is a wave of unique beauty and oceanic power. It’s able to dig a pipe where the surfer can stand and, depending on wave’s length, keep their arms open and touch its liquid emerald wall. Gary Elkerton, ex competitor in the ASP Surf World Championship –the most important world surfing competition- rightfully compared it to the best Australian waves. Guro- as locally nicknamed- will test any good surfer and must not be underestimated. I wish to remark it is not a wave for any surfer. On the other side of Guroneddu Bay, you can find Guro’s fearful twin. Known as No Limits, it is a challenge to the bravery (or maybe recklessness) of those who want to venture into it. It’s changeable, sometimes it’s easy, sometimes harder and requires more technique. It offers a wide range of conditions. The last spot I’d like to suggest is maybe the most impressive one. Portu Cauli in Masua, is indeed a magic place, both for its waves, a real test for anyone who wants to be called a surfer, and for its outstanding beauty. Waiting for the waves in the line-up with four friends and enjoying the wonderful sunset show will make you understand why surfing is a real supernatural experience for those who practise it and feel it in their skin. So? What you waiting for??? Go Surf!!! |
