In the last decade Sardinia-and in particular the Sulcis-Iglesiente area- has started to become one of the best free climbing destinations in the world. With more than 50 cliffs in an area of 50 square km, the region around Iglesias has become one of the favourite destination for the European free climbers.
They can definitely rely on a wide range of cliffs here. From those in Domusnovas with many overhanging caves and extremely difficult trails to the wonderful grey rock of Fluminimaggiore inland, often called "moon stone". Not to mention the sea cliffs of Bugerru and Masua, flagship of the area.
They have an excellent limestone, medium difficulty to easy trails and superb sea views.
What made the Sulcis-Iglesiente area popular with the climbers community is not only the wide range of routes. They also have very high safety and quality standards, inspired by the French model. Since 1985 a small group of climbers started to explore new routes, opening new itineraries and making sure that all the safety standards were in place.
Thanks to them, today climbing can be practised safely even by beginners and children, who can rely on special trails.
